LOVE AMIDST WAR
The Second World War was being fought.
All the men went for duty while women eagerly waited for their brothers,
fathers, sons and husbands. The Rainbow cake was innovated during this wait.
This innovation was a credit for a long wait.
The story behind this cake is quite
interesting though there is no much proof. The story is about young French
lovers, Joan and her love. Joan’s love was away for the war while she
desperately waited for him to return every single day.
Her love was very far from their
residence, he was fighting in the war and she waited. The war had just begun
and on the first day of her wait she spends her time baking a delicious cake
for him. It was a cake made of hand-picked Strawberries from their garden.
However he does not return.
Heartbroken she returns to her bed
hoping his return the next morning. The next morning brought new rays of hope
but was shattered. On the second day of her wait Joan prepares and bakes a
Pistachio cake for her love hoping he would return in the evening. She was
again disappointed.
Disappointed Joan combines the cake with
whipped cream. Her wait continued into the third day of war. She bakes an Orange
cake for him. She attaches the third layer to the first two with whipped cream
and goes to bed awaiting his return.
The next morning bore good news for her.
Her love returned tired and drained but did not forget to bring some chocolates
for her. These dark chocolates were melted and both with love and affection
cover the cake with the melted chocolate and serve the cake. They ate the cake
together rejoicing her love’s return and their never ending love.
This three layered cake with cream and
chocolate covering later came to be known as rainbow cake.
