The Curses-A Karnatakan Story

Karnataka, rich in its culture and practices was ruled by quite many kings and all these kings even though competed for land and territory, never forgave the love and devotion and worshiped almost the same god’s.  A common area of worship was Talkad.
Mysore province was ruled by Sri Ranga Raya, representative of the Vijaynagara Empire. Sri Ranga Raya even though beng one of the finest kings of the Empire was afflicted with an incurable disease. His back was swollen and boil covered his spine, later was detected to be a kind of cancer. Sri Raya immediately died of this cancer leaving behind his kingdom and the heirless queen, Alamelamma.
“ Alamelu…”
Alamelamma
“Heli raja”
Tell me my lord
“Alamelu nanna jeewana kadege barata eede… ”
Alamelamma, my life is coming to an end
“Raja inng matada bedi”
My lord, please do not talk like this
“Alamelu naanu satya ne heladu ”
Alamelamma, I always speak the truth
“Hanga idhare inge Chanmundeshwari nimma jeewana hege thogalak aagate?”
Then why is Goddess Chamundeshwari trying to take away your life like this??
“Alamelu eedhe jeewana…eedhe neethi antha nambkolamma…”
Alamelamma this is only life and this is only the destiny, believe it
“Ayithu Raja…”
As you wish my lord

“Alamelamma… Raja avara jeewana da kone bandbithide…”
Alamelamma, the lord’s life has reached the end
“Ennu heluthiduve??”
What are you speaking??
“Alamelamma raja avaru Chamundeshwari athara hoge bithtaru…”
Alamelamma the lord has reached Goddess Chamundeshwari
“Ayyo naanu eenu maduve…”
Oh what?? What will I do now??
“Rajanu eella!!! Nanu eenu maduve”
My lord is not there!! What am I supposed to do??

Alamelamma, not aware of what to do now decided upon selling the kingdom and returning to her maiden town, Malingi. Alamelamma was unaware of the fact that selling a kingdom would cause further problems and sold it.
Alamelamma’s only possession now was her jewelry and nothing more or less. Alamelamma though lived in a small place was happy about being away from the politics of the kingdom but sad of being away from her passed husband.
In Srirangapatna’s Temple of Srirangi
“Nev ebharu hogi… Alamelammana nage thekon banne”
You two go and bring Alamelamma’s jewelry
“Ayitu Shashtrigale”
As you wish elderly person
“Bega hogi”
Leave fast
“Ayitu!!”
Yes Of course
“Dasara kinta munche band bidi”
Also come before Dasara
“Neevu eng helidhiro ange aagadu”
As you command
“Beegaa hogi”
Leave fast

The two soldiers of the temple of Srirangapatna sat on their horse and began journey to cover a large distance before reaching Malingi. The way to Malingi was via Mysore and Talkad and then crossing the river Cauvery.
In quite a few days both reached the abode of Alamelamma for asking her jewels.
“Alamelammana beti haga beku!!”
We have to meet Alamelamma!!
“Banni karkond hogathini…”
Please come I will take you to her
“Bega hogi…”
Please go fast
“Ayithu”
Ok
“Edhe Alamelammana mane…”
This is only Alamelamma’s house
“Tumba dhanyawadagalu…”
Thank you so much
“Irli bedi”
Its fine
“Alamelamma!!”
Alamelamma!!
“Yaar adhu??”
Who is that??
“Naave…”
It’s us
“Olagade banni”
Please come in
“Barathivi”
We will surely

“Alamelamma navu Srirangadinda bandidivi…”
Alamelamma we are from Srirangapatna
“Nimage eenu beku??”
What do you both want
“Navu Srirangi koskara nimma aabhushanavannu padhayalu bandidivi…”
We have come for taking your promised jewelry for Srirangi
“Aadhare naam ee aabhushavannu yaara atthara nu Kodak aagalla…”
But I cannot and will not give my jewels to anyone
“Hanga gidhare naave togolthivi…”
If that is the case we can take it by ourselves
“Duura eeri”
 Be away from me

Thus did she respond to them, since they had no option the soldiers attacked over her and tried to snatch away her jewelry but she ran away. They followed her to the bank of Cauvery.  There frustrated, she cursed them.

“Talakadu maralaagi…Malingi maduvagali…Mysuru dhorege makkalagade hogali”
The curse thus said that Talakad should be covered by sand so that the soldiers who come over the horses will not be able to cross the sands. The second curse was that anybody who tries crossing Malingi will be pulled away into the whirlpool. The last one said that the king of Mysore will not have heir.

This has been happening. Talakad thus get covered by sand every year and the king of Mysore does not have son, only the adopted son had a heir.
